On this page we give you a very basic list of some of the things you should be considering to help create a point of reference.

Here we look at some things to consider if your IT requirements are between basic and complex, in other words, intermediate needs.

Wired or Wireless – Depending on your needs, are your users mobile (use laptops in the office AND outside?). Are there few ‘fixed’ devices, perhaps a printer and a scanner? A purely wireless network is an option but probably worth having some of the devices hardwired to maintain speed.

Internet Speed – Internet speed needs can depend on the applications installed and used, so consider the applications and storage method you are using. If you are using email , web, online applications such as CRM, then you will need a decent amount of  bandwidth. More local storage and applications will not need as much bandwidth, even so, you should consider the best you can afford. Things can change a lot in time, meaning more bandwidth may be needed later, so better to be prepared!

Cloud Computing – Depends on the applications used and the size of files being created or accessed. A business with a small amount of data may also be better suited to purely cloud computing, but beware the security!

Server and Storage – Companies with larger networks and using larger files may need more local storage space. Some medium networks might be better to implement a hybrid network, everything again depends completely on the type and size of the files.

Home Workers – Home workers are slightly more difficult to implement as there are 2 elements that need to be managed and supported. Always beware of the security issues that may occur. A secure homeworker environment normally needs an authentication method, in other words a way to make sure the person accessing the files is genuine. Software Needed – Many applications are now available online, Office365, includes a very good range of software such as Word, Excel and Outlook. The more complex software offerings could be CRM, collaboration software, project management software or Sage online or FreeAgent for accounting. For communications there are simple safe browsers such as Chrome and Skype or WhatsApp for direct calls. All these packages are available online or as local software packages to suit cloud or local based preferences.

Computers Needed – Based mainly on flexibility, if the users are going to be working remotely or from different locations, laptops or tablets should be considered. If your users are only working from the office then a purely static PC is more than sufficient. Specification depends on work requirements, the more complex the software the more RAM and processing power needed.

Communications – there are many options these days to speak to anyone without the need for a phone. Many applications (such as WhatsApp) are available on mobile, tablet and computer making it easy to communicate wherever you are.

Collaboration –  often a necessity whatever the size or complexity of the company, collaboration gives 2 or more users the opportunity to work on the same project files with little risk of losing data. There are many collaboration platforms, like Teams or Notion, depends on the  task in hand.

Training – smaller companies tend to have wider needs for each user, larger companies have more defined needs for each user. For companies with more basic needs, consider a package of several skills at a less comprehensive level.
